Tumbak is made in a family business specialising in basket weaving. Here, each vase is carefully and meticulously crafted by hand from banana fibre. This robust material is skilfully woven into the shape of a classic bulbous vase, and the design is rounded off with applications of light-coloured raffia at the top and bottom.

Vases made from woven natural materials such as tumbak create stylish accents and harmonise particularly well with dried flowers or elegant palm fronds. Green plants can also be placed decoratively in them if you use a suitable narrow inner container. This large vase, which is over half a metre tall, is sure to become one of the most striking highlights in your home, emphasising your personal style in a natural way.

Main material: Banana Fibre

Our vases are made from plant fibers. They therefore wonderfully smell and feel like nature.

Banana fibres are the fibres of the layered trunks of agriculturally used banana trees. The intense brown color occurs naturally when the fibres are dried under the sun for about a week. Then the individual strips are rolled into the characteristic, approximately 6 mm thick strands. Only old, dying banana trees are used for this material. This enables these crops to have a second life as a dimensionally stable and robust raw material for many handcrafted baskets here at Soeji.

This vase is handmade in Java, Indonesia.
When selecting our local producers, we value fair pay and good working conditions. Only adult and experienced artisans work in the companies from which we purchase our goods. No harmful chemicals are used in the manufacturing process. Since all work steps are done by hand, the production process hardly generates any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and permanent personal contact with the companies.
